Research Master Variant within MID programme



If you want to prepare for a future career in scientific research, such as a PhD position, you can opt for the Research Master Variant of the Master International Development Studies. This variant focuses extra on developing research competencies and acquiring in-depth disciplinary knowledge and trains students to a high academic caliber. The Research Master Variant can be done within any of the three MID specialisations.

Special Features of the Research Master Variant
The research master programme is a variant of the two-year MSc programme International Development Studies (120 credits) and includes as special features:
  • Advanced disciplinary courses in the domain of the specialisation (12 credits)
  • Specialisation courses specific to the specialisation (12 credits).
  • Research Master Cluster : a set of special courses which focus on the further development of research skills (18 credits)
  • Considerable actual research experience is obtained during your study: Minor thesis of 24 credits in the second year plus Major thesis of 36 credits in the second year
  • Your thesis could involve cooperation with a foreign university or research oriented institute. The Research Master Variant promotes research work at, or in cooperation with a foreign university or research institute for one of the theses.
  • You receive guidance on how to translate your thesis into a manuscript for an international scientific journal. 
  • Two graduate schools are involved in partnership with the International Development Studies programme ensuring that you achieve the highest academic standards: the Mansholt Graduate School and the Ceres school.

Additional Requirements for the Research Master Variant
Your grade for the bachelor thesis must be at least an 8. Based on your research capabilities, your thesis supervisor must support your application for the Research Master Variant.


Admission to the Research Master Variant
You do not need to apply separately for the Research Master Variant. Admission for the Research Master Variant involves a two-step process:

Step 1: First apply to the regular MID programme and choose a specialisation in consultation and agreement with the study advisor.

Step 2: Send an email to Sudha.Loman@wur.nl after you have been admitted and request consideration of your application for the Research Master Variant.  Include a letter of motivation (why you want to do the Research Master Variant), and a letter of recommendation that reflects your research potential. Your application will be reviewed by a Committee for Admission to Research Master Variant.
